Fun, but over too quickly!Jul 13, 2010 I got this as a gift for my 10 year old grandson who really liked the game, but was able to solve it very quickly. I guess it could have been a little more challenging.
Great action adventure co-op game!Jul 05, 2010 For someone who is a Marvel fan (but not a hardcore fan), this is truly an excellent hack/smash/shooting game, esp. fun in co-op mode with a friend. I don't really care about the story, cinematics or voice overs as long as the gameplay is fun (and indeed it is).
Pros:
- The visuals are really nice, the fusion powers are creative and spectacular
- Great fun in co-op mode playing with a friend (note: because there's such much going on, a bigger TV will help)
- Good replay value (you can go back and choose a different side, difficult level, and try out the powers for all the characters)
Cons:
- Still not sure if the DLC content is really coming back till the end of 2010 per Marvel's press release (July 2010): [...]
- Yes, once in a while there's a bug (where Wolverine appears to be flying) but I have only seen it happen once for 20 hours of gameplay so far. Not a big deal to me.
- Lack of creative uses of characters' powers for adventuring (not fighting)
Overall I think it is a pretty solid and entertaining game, by far the best action adventure game I have played so far and a must for any Marvel fan.
Awesome, action packed game, and Activision brought back the DLC for it!!!Jun 05, 2010 Originally, I had posted a review about this game about a month ago, talking about how disappointed I was in it because Activision had removed the downloadable content for it, which was basically an add-on that added five new characters to the game: Carnage, Black Panther, Magneto, Psylocke, and Cable. I still had given the game's fun factor a high rating because even without the DLC, the game was just plain fun, the way a video game should be. Despite this however, I was still sorely disappointing that Activision had removed the DLC from Xbox Live and PSN, giving very little time or warning that was going to happen. As I read different forums I found I was not alone in my disappointment, with many being down right angry with Activision, feeling as though they "screwed the fans", myself being one of them. Ya I know, its just a game and the game still kicks butt without the DLC, but for those of us who really wanted to experiencing the game in its all, we would not be able too. Not only that, but there are certain achievements in the game which became unobtainable unless you had the extra characters, another factor which was disappointing and made the game seemingly incomplete for many. I even voiced my opinion to Activision and expressed my disappointment with them in this move, but was only told that they most likely will never re-post the DLC for this game and it was gone for good.
This all came to an end however on July 1st, when I just randomly signed into one of the game forums, and saw a posting that Activision had put the DLC back. Quickly signing onto Xbox Live, I found that sure enough it was there. Not only that, but they also made the Juggernaut available to download, as well as the two compatibility patches enabling people who do not have the DLC to play with those that do during online gaming. I read that basically because of all the hate mail and bad feedback they received after removing the DLC the first time around, they decided to put it back up. They said that they fought to have it put back up largely in part due to so many of the fans requesting it. I Personally I felt like that was really cool of them. It just felt like to me that they did what they could to make the fans happy, and actually listened to the voice of the fans, a first in my experience as a gamer with any game publisher. Personally, I could have done without the DLC, and this is just a video game "life goes on", but to see a game publisher actually listen to the fans to the extent that they put back a small game add-on says a lot about them. So anyway, needless to say I felt a little regretful sending them my negative two cents in the past, and felt I may have misjudged Activision.
So anyway, about the game itself, its just awesome. You got all the coolest comic book characters at your disposal to beat the crap out of anyone who stands in your way. The controls are similar to the first Marvel Ultimate Alliance, but that is where the similarities end in my opinion. Where the game differs the most, is just the sheer amount of action and fast pace. There are twice as many enemies in this game than the first, and it is considerably harder at that. Boss battles are much more challenging and frequent, and require a little more strategy then just smashing away at the buttons, a definite plus in my opinion. Each character has their own set of four special abilities (probably the only thing I think was inferior to its predecessor since that one had many more abilities) and a number of character upgrades obtained with gold orbs you will get throughout the game. Overall, this game is not too complicated and most anyone will be able to jump right in and have a blast, the aspect of the game I feel is its greatest appeal. However, if you are sensitive to flashing lights and the such, be careful because this game is full of that. Basically, this game is very fun and addicting and in my opinion, is far better and much more fast paced than the first Ultimate Alliance. It is a must for comic fans, but also a must if you want a great enjoyable video game.
BewareMay 17, 2010 I bought this game because I thought I would feel like a super hero, but the characters are small and you do not feel like you're using iron man. marvel vs capcom 2 does a better job.
Great gameMay 14, 2010 Great game loads of fun to play coop or solo. Way better than the first game, both graphics and the fact stat boosts are not tied to costumes.
The sales were not great so Activion and VV did not renew licenses for DLC or make all they said they would.
If you are a fan of Marvel or super heroes, this is a no brainer purchase.
Pros:
-Lots of marvel Characters
-all 4 powers are useful in this game, unlike the last game which had several powers and only 2-3 useful ones.
gameplay is great
-Marvel Civil war story is great, 1/4 of the game is secret war, 1/2 is CW. The first 3/4 is great, but the last 1/4 is VV made and a let down compared to the rest.
Cons:
-Could have been longer
-Story is great until the VV spin on it, their part of it is meh. They should have made Doom the final bad guy.
-The secret character is a waste of a slot.
